FIC Report (Benue State) – The Benue State Police Command has rescued five victims of a kidnapping involving a commercial passenger bus travelling from Enugu State to Abuja, while nine others remain in captivity.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, the bus was attacked along the Ankpechi–Omutele axis of Ohimini Local Government Area on the night of 13 August 2026.

Police operatives launched a coordinated rescue operation early the following morning, which involved an exchange of gunfire with the suspected kidnappers.

The operation led to the successful rescue of five victims, including a four-year-old boy. One of the rescued victims sustained a gunshot injury during the operation and was rushed to a medical facility in Otukpo, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The PPRO said operatives, working alongside sister security agencies, are intensifying efforts to secure the release of the remaining nine victims, with the operation being conducted cautiously to prioritise the safety of those still in captivity.

The Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, CP Cletus C.N. Nwadiogbu, psc(+), mnips, PhD, acknowledged the concerns of the affected families and the public, and assured them that efforts were ongoing to secure the safe rescue of the remaining victims.

The Command has appealed to members of the public, particularly residents of communities around the affected area, to remain calm and vigilant, and to volunteer credible information that could aid the operation and help prevent similar attacks.

The Police Public Relations Officer added that the Command would continue to provide updates as the situation develops.
