FIC REPORT (LAGOS STATE) – Tired of the lights suddenly going out right in the middle of your favorite show or work task? Good news arrived on October 15, 2026, for residents across Lagos and key commercial hubs as the Federal Government of Nigeria officially approved plans to build a brand new East-West electricity grid, specifically designed to put an end to frustrating grid collapses.
Speaking at an energy conference in Lagos, Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe shared the exciting update, emphasizing that the government is taking direct, targeted action to tackle Nigeria’s age-old power challenges head-on. Instead of attempting to patch up broken equipment piece by piece, the federal government is grouping the nation into strategic energy zones to deliver long-term stability.
At the very top of the priority list is the vital Lagos–Abuja industrial corridor, which currently accounts for more than half of the country’s entire electricity demand. By constructing a dedicated, modern transmission line connecting these critical commercial centers, the new grid will ensure that homes, markets, and factories across Lagos and surrounding business districts receive steady, reliable power without overloading the national system.
The Power Minister explained that large portions of the nation’s electricity setup date back over 50 years, with some aging facilities even bearing labels from the old NEPA era. To ensure public funds are deployed effectively, engineers are concluding a comprehensive technical audit that targets exact points of failure, ranging from replacing damaged towers to upgrading high-voltage cables. This focused approach guarantees the new East-West transmission line will run smoothly for decades, offering fewer power trips, dependable electricity for Lagos, and a major boost for businesses nationwide.
