FIC Report (Akwa Ibom State) – Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Gynaecological Oncology and Reproductive Health) and Chief Medical Director of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), Prof. Emem Bassey, has called on women to take their health seriously and avoid lifestyle choices that could predispose them to illness and premature death.

Prof. Bassey made the call while delivering the 139th Inaugural Lecture of the University of Uyo titled, “A Lifetime of Wellness: Advancing Women’s Health through Clinical Excellence, Policy and Leadership,” on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the 1,000-Seater TETFund Auditorium, Main Campus, University of Uyo.

In his lecture, he highlighted key issues affecting women’s health, including adolescent reproductive health, maternal mortality, HIV and other infectious diseases, infertility, malignant and non-malignant tumours, and the psychological burden of obstetric and gynaecological disorders. He also examined government policies and programmes that have advanced women’s health in Nigeria.

Prof. Bassey emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among government agencies, healthcare institutions, and development partners to improve access to quality healthcare services for women.

He concluded by stating that, “A Lifetime of Wellness is therefore more than the title of this lecture; it is a vision, a commitment and a shared responsibility.”

Chairman of the occasion and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Christopher Nyong Ekong, commended Prof. Bassey for his scholarly contributions, describing the lecture as insightful, timely, and impactful.

As part of the event, Prof. Bassey presented a copy of the inaugural lecture book to the Vice-Chancellor. The lecture attracted academics, healthcare professionals, students, government officials, UUTH management and staff, as well as other distinguished guests who applauded the lecturer for his outstanding presentation.

Prof. Bassey expressed gratitude to the University of Uyo for the honour of delivering the inaugural lecture and appreciated the management and staff of UUTH, professional colleagues, family, friends, and guests for their support and presence.
