SOSG Alerts Residents On Outbreak Of Meningitis Disease

FIC Report (Sokoto State) – The people of Sokoto State have been advised to remain vigilant on the rising cases of suspected meningitis disease, (it is a serious and contagious infection that can cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membrane), in some Local Government Areas of the State.

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, Dr Faruk Umar Abubakar, issued a statement which explains that this became necessary as most of the samples collected by the Ministry of Health for investigation were confirmed to be Meningitis. The Ministry has intensified surveillance management and public health intervention to curb the spread of the disease.

The Commissioner, however, advised residents to take preventive measures, such as getting vaccinated, practicing good hygiene, avoiding overcrowded places, ensuring proper ventilation and seeking medical attention immediately if symptoms occur.

He, also warned medical practitioners and other health workers to desist from treating infected persons at home.

According to the commissioner, the Sokoto State Governor, Ahamed Aliyu has already provided all the necessary medication to health facilities across the State.

The Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Ministry of Health, Nura Bello Maikwanci, explained that some of the symptoms of Meningitis include, fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, vomiting and diarrhea among others.
