Lagos, Nigeria — At the National Tourism Forum held in Lagos, the Honourable Minister of Arts, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Barr. Hannatu Musa Musawa, joined by former Honourable Minister of Tourism Lola Ade-John, outlined a bold vision for Nigeria’s tourism sector under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda. The event, attended by key industry leaders, state officials, and stakeholders, showcased Nigeria’s commitment to fostering tourism as a vehicle for community empowerment, economic growth, and cultural enrichment.
In her welcome address, Honourable Minister Musawa emphasized the Ministry’s forward-looking strategy, saying, “Our mission transcends traditional tourism; we are building platforms for economic empowerment, cultural exchange, and community development. With the support of our partners and every Nigerian, we are laying a foundation for a tourism sector that not only draws global interest but also uplifts the lives of our people.” Her words framed a tourism approach that centers local engagement, driving economic growth while preserving Nigeria’s rich heritage.
Former Honourable Minister Lola Ade-John reflected on the strides made during her tenure, expressing pride in the progress achieved. “The vision was always clear: to redefine tourism in Nigeria as a source of pride and economic vitality,” she stated. “Together, we’ve strengthened tourism infrastructure, encouraged private investment, and highlighted Nigeria’s unique attractions to a global audience. Today’s efforts build on those foundations, and it is inspiring to witness this continuity of purpose.”
Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism & Creative Economy, Ibiene Roberts, FNIM, OON, delivered opening remarks through Director Dorothy Duruaku, stressing tourism’s vast potential to diversify Nigeria’s economy by creating jobs, fostering development, and preserving cultural heritage. The updated National Tourism Policy addresses areas essential to realizing this potential, such as sustainable development, private sector collaboration, community involvement, and modernization of regulatory frameworks.
Dr. Ikenna Nwosu, Facilitator of THECCS Policy Commission at the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), highlighted the need for a comprehensive, refreshed policy aligned with UN tourism standards. Dr. Nwosu emphasized that NESG, working pro bono, is committed to ensuring stakeholder contributions shape a cohesive and sustainable tourism strategy.
Several key declarations emerged from the forum, laying the foundation for immediate policy action. Among these was the launch of the National Tourism Masterplan, a public-private partnership framework aimed at elevating Nigeria’s tourism infrastructure to global standards. This includes enhancing tourist sites, training professional tour guides, and promoting community-based tourism initiatives.
Director of International Tourism Relations & Cooperation at the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism & Creative Economy, Ms Dorothy Duruaku (Public Sector Co-Chair), and Lolo Ngozi Ngoka, Thematic Lead for the Tourism and Hospitality Industries Group at NESG (Private Sector Co-Chair), introduced the Tourism Policy Drafting Committee. Together, they presented the reviewed National Tourism Policy, laying out a roadmap for sustainable, inclusive growth. A technical presentation by Ngozi Ngoka detailed how the policy aligns with global standards and Nigeria’s tourism goals.
The event also included a panel discussion with industry leaders such as Dr. Philip Maga, Director Overseeing the Office of the Director General (DOODG) and Dr. Munzali Dantata of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN). Discussions covered sustainable tourism strategies and the critical role of public-private partnerships in achieving the policy’s objectives.
In a unique engagement format, Private Sector Co-Chair Ngozi Ngoka invited attendees to share their perspectives on Nigeria’s tourism appeal. Participants highlighted Nigeria’s culinary diversity, hospitality, cultural vibrancy, and creative spirit as distinctive strengths to promote globally.
As Nigeria moves forward with this renewed commitment, the Ministry and stakeholders have pledged to ensure that the National Tourism Policy serves as an operational blueprint guiding the sector’s growth. Through this collaborative effort, Nigeria is set to unlock its full tourism potential, positioning itself as a premier destination, enriching communities, preserving cultural heritage, and contributing meaningfully to national economic and social progress.
