Tinubu Advocates Greater Women Representation In Politics

FIC Report (Edo State) – The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reiterated the need for inclusive governance, urging for increased women’s representation and participation in the nation’s political and developmental processes.

Speaking at the 774 Explode Programme—an empowerment initiative of the Office of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Women Leader—held at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City, the First Lady, represented by the Minister of Women Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, lauded Nigerian women for their invaluable contributions to nation-building.

She expressed concern over the low number of women in elective and appointive positions, stressing the need to change the narrative. Senator Tinubu highlighted women’s remarkable achievements in various sectors, advocating for greater economic empowerment, enhanced political participation, and the introduction of reserved seats for women to strengthen governance and social development.

In her remarks, the APC National Women Leader, Dr. Mary Alile, decried the cultural and societal barriers that continue to discourage women from venturing into politics, including stereotypes that portray politics as a “dirty game” and beliefs that women should limit themselves to domestic roles.

She emphasized that the current generation of women is more enlightened and determined, deserving equal opportunities to serve in leadership positions. “The 774 Explode Project is a nationwide initiative aimed at boosting women’s participation in politics,” Dr. Alile said. “Our message is simple—Give a woman a chance. Once reserved seats are achieved, we will have a pool of capable women ready to lead and serve.”

Earlier in her welcome address, the Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, described Edo State as a land of rich culture and heritage, symbolizing love, passion, and resilience. She underscored the importance of women’s inclusion in politics to promote equity, justice, and sustainable development.

According to her, “Women’s participation in politics is not just desirable, it is essential. It strengthens gender equality, enhances social justice, and promotes sustainable progress. We must dismantle barriers such as cultural norms, limited access to education, and discriminatory practices that restrict women’s involvement in governance.”

Mrs. Anani further noted that women’s inclusion in politics should not be seen as a competition but as a pathway to more accountable governance and better decision-making. She urged women to support one another and called for policies that encourage female leadership and empowerment across all levels.

The event featured a keynote address on “Enhancing Gender Space in Politics and Inclusive Governance”, as well as cultural displays and an empowerment session. Highlights included the presentation of ₦200,000 cash grants and certificates to participants of a previous workshop, distribution of ₦50,000 empowerment grants, sewing and grinding machines, food items such as rice, pasta, and macaroni, and free medical outreach for women in attendance.
