Uzodimma Advocates AI-Driven Curriculum Reform For Polytechnics, Technology Institutions

FIC Report (Imo State) – Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has called for a comprehensive review of the curriculum of polytechnics and universities of technology to align with emerging global realities, particularly in the areas of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital innovation, research, and skills development.

The governor made the call while receiving a delegation of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) led by its National President, Dr. Shammah Kpanja, at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Owerri.

Uzodimma stressed that technical institutions remain critical to Nigeria’s participation in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, noting that the global economy increasingly places greater value on practical skills, innovation, and problem-solving abilities than academic certificates alone.

According to him, the future belongs to individuals equipped with relevant skills and technological competencies capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving digital economy.

He urged polytechnics and universities of technology across the country to reposition themselves as centres for innovation, research, technology transfer, and industry-driven learning that can support national industrial transformation and economic growth.

The governor further challenged ASUP to champion curriculum reforms and undertake labour market assessments to ensure that graduates acquire skills that are relevant, employable, and responsive to current industry needs.

He emphasized the need for greater collaboration among government, educational institutions, legislators, and other stakeholders to revitalize technical education and strengthen the capacity of Nigerian institutions to drive innovation and technological advancement.

Uzodimma also acknowledged ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen technical and vocational education, describing sustained investment in education, technology, and human capital development as essential to achieving national development objectives.

The governor recalled his intervention in facilitating dialogue between ASUP and the Federal Government, which contributed to the resolution of issues affecting the polytechnic sector, noting that industrial harmony remains vital to educational growth and national progress.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Mr. Chibuzor Asomugha, who represented the National President of ASUP, commended Governor Uzodimma for his contributions to education, infrastructure development, and workers’ welfare.

He also appreciated the governor’s role in fostering understanding between the union and the Federal Government, which helped facilitate the signing of an agreement that addressed concerns within the polytechnic system.

The visit underscored the growing importance of technical and vocational education in equipping Nigerian youths with the skills, knowledge, and innovative capacity required to compete effectively in a technology-driven global economy.
