FIC Report (Kano State) – Malam Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Spokesperson of Kano State Governor, has pledged to lead the crusade against sickle cell anemia in the state by 2034. This vow was made during the foundation laying ceremony of Sadiq Maddibo Memorial Quranic Centre in Dawakin Tofa town.
According to Usman Gwadabe, Director Public Enlightenment, Kano Government House, “Malam Sunusi Bature’s advocacy against sickle cell anemia is a timely intervention, considering the devastating effects of the disease on families and communities.” He commended Bature’s commitment to sensitizing the public on the importance of pre-marital testing and adherence to the Kano Pre-marital Law.
Bature’s commitment is personal, having lost a son to sickle cell anemia after a 15-year battle. His other child still struggles with the disease. He emphasized that sickle cell is more devastating than HIV and must be fought with utmost seriousness.
The strategy to eradicate sickle cell includes collaborating with the sickle cell community, enforcing the Kano Pre-marital Law, and publicly sensitizing citizens against marriages that could lead to the transmission of sickle cell anemia. Bature stressed the importance of adhering to the state’s pre-marital test law.
Bature shared his son’s ordeal, including 14.5 years of suffering, over 1000 hospital admissions, and 1000 injections. He described living with sickle cell as “living on death row.” This personal experience fuels his determination to prevent others from suffering similarly.
The initiative has the full support of Islamic scholars and demonstrates the government’s commitment to addressing the sickle cell crisis in Kano State. By working together, the state aims to eradicate sickle cell anemia by 2034, ensuring a healthier future for its citizens.
