NIWRMC Partners with States and Local Governments to ensure effective Water Resources Management

The Acting Executive Director of the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC), Mrs. Sakinatu Suleiman Abbo Jimeta has said that the Commission partners with States and Local Governments to ensure effective water resources management in the country.

She stated this when she received the Members of the House of Representatives Committee on Delegated Legislation at the Commission in Abuja.

Speaking during the meeting, Mrs Jimeta said the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission is a unique regulatory organization involving a partnership of the Federal, States, Local Governments and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The purpose of this partnership would be enabled by the National Water Resources Act which seeks to essentially to promote and coordinate effective planning and management for the equitable distribution of water resources in an economically and environmentally sustainable manner, which implies the use of the water, land and other related environmental resources of the shared National and International Water Resources,” she said.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Delegated Legislative, Rt Honourable Olufemi Richard Bamisile said “as the population grows and urbanization accelerates, the demand for clean and accessible water continues to rise. This places a significant responsibility on all of us, government agencies, policy makers and stakeholders to work collaboratively toward sustainable water management practices. We must strive to foster an environment where regulations not only protect our water resources but also encourage innovation and investment in the sector.”

He appreciated the hard work and dedication exhibited by the professionals at the Commission, noting that the commitment to ensuring sustainable water management is commendable and it is crucial for the health and prosperity of the nation.
