FIC Report (Benue State) – As part of activities marking the 2025 World Press Freedom Week, members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, held a special thanksgiving service on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the Glory of His Majesty Ministries, Makurdi.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of NUJ Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, expressed deep concern over the growing number of journalists facing imprisonment globally. He revealed that no fewer than 1,000 journalists are currently incarcerated worldwide, with 75 of them being Nigerians — a stark indicator of the persistent threats and challenges confronting media professionals, including those in Benue State.
Comrade Ugber reaffirmed the journalists’ unwavering commitment to informing the public and upholding democratic values despite adversity. He also appreciated the host church for its spiritual impact and hospitality.
In his remarks during the service, Senior Pastor of Glory of His Majesty Ministries, Evangelist Michael Ewache, described journalists as “watchmen on the walls,” assigned with the noble task of preserving truth and justice in society.
Quoting John 8:32, Pastor Ewache urged journalists to embrace the truth, stating, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” He emphasized that truth is not only a spiritual mandate but also a professional pillar for journalists.
He charged media practitioners to remain accurate and impartial, especially in an era where state actors sometimes target them for speaking the truth. Pastor Ewache also called on the Church to support journalists through prayers and encouragement, rather than suspicion or indifference.
He declared the month of May as a season of “Manifesting His Glory and Notable Wonders,” urging believers to remain prayerful and steadfast, warning that a lack of opposition may signify spiritual complacency.
