UBTH Experienced No Internal Strike Action, a Rare Feat in Nigeria's Public Health Sector – Says Prof. Darlington Obaseki

FIC Report (Edo State) – Prof. Darlington Obaseki, the Immediate Past Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), has commended the hospital for its remarkable achievement of operating without any internal Strike Action over the years. According to Prof. Obaseki, this feat is exceedingly rare within Nigeria’s Public Health Institutions, where industrial actions and labor disputes often disrupt Healthcare delivery and Organizational stability.

Obaseki disclosed this on Friday, 15th August 2025, during his Valedictory Ceremony and book launch at UBTH, Benin City.

In his valedictory speech, Prof. Obaseki emphasized that the absence of Internal Strikes at UBTH is a testament to the hospital’s robust Management, effective Leadership, and a Culture of mutual respect and understanding between Management and Staff. “UBTH experienced no internal strike action during my tenure and beyond, which is quite exceptional in Nigeria’s public Health sector. This reflects a harmonious work environment where Staff grievances are addressed proactively, and institutional values are upheld,” he stated.

He further attributed this peaceful Industrial relation to several Strategic reforms and a leadership approach rooted in Principles of transparency, Accountability, and Staff engagement. Under his Stewardship, the hospital implemented comprehensive performance review mechanisms, fostered open communication channels, and promoted a culture of professionalism and mutual respect. These efforts created an environment where staff felt valued and heard, significantly reducing the likelihood of Industrial unrest.

Obaseki, whose book titled *”A Legacy of Reform: A Future Assured”* was reviewed by Prof. Innocent A. Ujah, commended management staff and noted that the hospital’s success in avoiding internal strike actions has not only contributed to improved healthcare delivery but has also set a benchmark for other Public Health Institutions across Nigeria. Prof. Obaseki expressed hope that other hospitals could learn from UBTH’s example, emphasizing the importance of leadership that prioritizes staff welfare alongside institutional goals.

“Leadership is about creating a conducive atmosphere where staff’s concerns are addressed promptly, and their contributions are recognized. This approach not only enhances morale but also ensures that patient care remains uninterrupted,” Prof. Obaseki explained.

Prof. Darlington Obaseki’s praise for UBTH’s achievement underscores the critical role of effective leadership and Institutional Culture in ensuring stability and excellence in Nigeria’s healthcare sector. The hospital’s experience serves as an inspiring model for other health institutions striving for harmonious industrial relations and improved service delivery.

Earlier, Rt. Hon. Comr. Philip Shaibu, the Immediate Past Deputy Governor of Edo State and the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), commended Obaseki for his contributions to the hospital’s human and Infrastructural development. He praised Prof. Darlington Obaseki’s leadership, noting his impactful contributions to healthcare and governance. They recounted how, as Deputy Governor, they sought his advice on immunization programs, despite his lack of medical background, emphasizing the importance of asking questions and consulting experts to avoid failure. Their collaboration led to the creation of a Unified Immunization Platform adopted Nationally.

Additionally, Shaibu outlined Obaseki’s role during the COVID-19 pandemic as being instrumental in ensuring the successful hosting of the National Sports Festival amiduu global postponements, showcasing his expertise and leadership. He highlighted his ongoing influence, calling upon him for reforms at the National Sports Institute, especially regarding paramedic training, reaffirming his effectiveness and dedication.
