FIC Report (Abia State) – The Abia State Government has announced landmark collaborations with the Federal Government, World Bank, and the International Solar Alliance (ISA) to scale up renewable energy development and strengthen health service delivery in the state.
Briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by the Executive Governor, Dr Alex Otti, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said Abia is actively participating in the $750 million World Bank–backed Distributed Access to Renewable Energy Scale-Up (DARES) programme, which will significantly boost power supply across the state.
He further revealed that the government is working with the International Solar Alliance to develop regulations for the operation of mini-grids in line with the newly signed Abia State Electricity Law 2025. According to him, this will provide a thriving environment for investment, sustain solar power projects, and help mitigate climate change.
On the health sector, Kanu disclosed that the ongoing recruitment exercise has so far recorded 1,983 applications, out of which 1,348 have been shortlisted. He added that the shortlisting process is still ongoing and may scale up further. The Computer-Based Test (CBT) for shortlisted candidates will hold from August 26–30, while interviews for successful applicants will run from September 2–16.
Reiterating government’s resolve to employ qualified personnel in its healthcare institutions, the commissioner announced that advertisements have also been placed for contract consultants, primary consultants, and medical officers, with the application portal closing on August 30.
