FIC Report (Lagos State, Nigeria): Lagos State is gearing up to make a significant impact at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on September 26, 2025, at the Times Center. According to a statement released on the Lagos official newsreel on Monday, Lagos State expressed its desire to share its story of resilience, innovation, and partnership that power progress at the 80th Session of UNGA.
Lagos State is set to share these stories and lessons “gathered along the journey; build alliances and strengthen partnerships that make sustainable development possible”.
Nigeria’s presence at the UNGA is expected to be led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu. Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, announce new Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement, and participate in bilateral meetings and side events.
The 80th Session of UNGA has the theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights”.
The UNGA session will feature key events including:
- High-level meetings on non-communicable diseases
- Climate summit
- SDG Moment
- Commemorations like the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on September 26, 2025
Discussions at the event will likely cover critical areas like climate action and economic growth, highlighting local solutions with global impact. Lagos aims to lead and strengthen alliances, underscoring the importance of collaboration for sustainable development.
