Abia State Moves to Comply with EU Deforestation Regulation

FIC Report (Abia State) – Abia State has taken a significant step towards complying with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), a move aimed at preventing deforestation and forest degradation linked to commodity production.

The state’s Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, made this known during a meeting with the Trace Team in his office at Government House, Umuahia, Abia State. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to creating a business-friendly environment that attracts investment, drives innovation, and promotes high-quality products.

Engr. Emetu assured the state government of its unwavering support in advancing their shared vision for a resilient commodity sector.

The Chief of Party from the Trace Team, Mr. Nene Akwetey Kadjoe, in his speech, expressed gratitude to the state government for their support, commending their commitment to sustainable forest management and environmental protection.

He noted that the partnership aims to ensure Abia State’s agricultural products meet the EU’s deforestation-free requirements, enhancing the state’s economy and preserving its natural resources and revealed that a committee is being constituted to pilot the EUDR compliance, bringing together key stakeholders, including government agencies, farmers, and exporters.

In her contribution, the Abia State Representative and Special Assistant to the Governor on Climate Change and Sustainability, Lady Esther Chioma Ajah, described the initiative as the inception of a traceability program in compliance with EU regulations. She thanked the Governor for repositioning the state for investment growth and increased revenue income.

While giving vote of thanks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs. Ijeoma Aruwa, assured that her ministry would provide every necessary support to ensure the project’s success. She exposed that the committee will focus on ensuring Abia State’s agricultural products, such as palm oil, rubber, and cocoa, meet the EU’s deforestation-free requirements.

The meeting which featured inauguration of Committee for piloting EUDR Compliance had in attendance top government appointees including Deputy Chief of Staff, Hon Chijioke Nwankwo.
