FIC Report (Edo State) – The National Institute for Sports (NIS) is taking strategic steps to decentralize sports training across Nigeria, with the goal of making opportunities more accessible to Youth at the grassroots level. This Initiative was highlighted during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Benin City by the NIS Director General, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, a former Deputy Governor of Edo State, along with his team. They announced plans to establish Zonal headquarters in various regions of the Country.
During the visit, Shaibu announced plans to establish Zonal headquarters in various regions of the Country, including Enugu for the South-East, Kaduna for the North-West, Adamawa for the North-East, and Plateau for the North-Central.
Shaibu emphasized that the decentralization effort aims to bring sports training, coaching, and talent identification closer to young people in their local communities. He noted that this approach will help discover and nurture sporting talents from an early age, providing more opportunities for youth to excel in sports.
Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu congratulated Governor Okpebholo on his One-year Anniversary in Office and lauded his achievements in Infrastructural development, including the revival of the New Edo Line.
In response, Governor Okpebholo expressed enthusiasm about the new zonal headquarters, emphasizing its potential to position Edo as a Central hub for Sports development in Nigeria.
He praised President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to Youth and Sports under the Renewed Hope Agenda, noting the decision as a “timely and strategic move” that will position Edo as a hub for Sports development in Nigeria and a key driver of national progress. With the establishment of Zonal headquarters in Edo, Local Athletes and Coaches are expected to receive increased support, training, and resources to enhance their skills and competitiveness.
A move Governor Monday Okpebholo described as a major milestone for regional sports development and youth empowerment, underscoring the importance of these initiatives for Edo’s future.
In a related ceremony, Governor Okpebholo inaugurated the Edo State Judicial Service Commission and the Governing Council of Edo State Polytechnic, Usen. He called on the newly appointed members to serve with integrity, diligence, and a strong commitment to the development of Edo.
