The Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) and the Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today in Abuja to establish a collaborative frame work for research, development, validation and commercialization of non-repellant products aimed at protecting the citizens against River Blindness and Sleeping Sickness using indigenous technology.
Speaking at the event the Permanent Secretary of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mr. Phillip Ndiomu said that the collaboration reflects the Ministry’s commitment towards innovation-driven solutions that translate research into practical home grown technologies for public health protection, disease control and economic value creation.
Phillip further said that the event marks a significant step towards advancing science, natural resources and innovation for national development.
He added that the collaboration is also a step towards total transformation of science and technology eco-system for the betterment of the citizens.
The Permanent Secretary commended the Director-Generals for working assiduously using indigenous technology to treat the menace that is affecting the nation.
Speaking, the Director-General of Nigerian Natural Medicine Development Agency (NNMDA) Prof. Martins Emeje said that the purpose of the collaboration is to harness natural resources for the treatment of River Blindness and Sleeping Sickness diseases in the country.
Earlier, the Director-General Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research (NITR) Dr. J. J Ajakaiye said that the Agency is responsible for conducting research, developing appropriate technology as well as capacity building for the control and elimination of African Trypanosomiasis and Onchocerciasis and their respective vectors in the country.
