FIC Report (Edo State) – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has reaffirmed its strategic alliance with the Nigerian Army, emphasizing ongoing efforts to combat Kidnapping and other Criminal activities plaguing the State. The renewed partnership was publicly reinforced during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Benin City by Major General Nansak Danjuma Shagaya, Commander of the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport, accompanied by Senior Officers.
During the meeting, Governor Okpebholo highlighted the positive outcomes resulting from the collaborative efforts between the State Government and Security Agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army’s 4 Brigade. He expressed confidence that these Joint aoperations have begun to yield tangible results in restoring Peace and Security to Edo communities affected by Criminal elements.
“I am pleased to welcome you and to acknowledge the positive outcomes of our partnership in tackling kidnapping and other crimes. Your personnel have been working tirelessly, often spending days in the bush, and their resilience is truly commendable. Their sacrifices are restoring peace and rebuilding confidence among our people,” the Governor stated.
Governor Okpebholo assured the Nigerian Army of continued support, particularly in the enhancement of security infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of maintaining and strengthening Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) strategically positioned across the state to facilitate rapid response and effective surveillance. “We are committed to supporting these bases and deepening our partnership. Please extend my appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff for his leadership and dedication to securing our people,” he stated.
The Governor also addressed the pressing issue of flooding affecting the Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport located in Isibor. He explained that immediate intervention might be limited due to the ongoing rainy season and the necessity of following proper procurement procedures. However, he recalled a previous successful intervention at Ekenwan Barracks, which significantly improved conditions there. “Although the current situation in Isibor requires careful assessment, we will study it closely and determine the best course of action to mitigate the flooding impact,” he assured.
In his response, Major General Shagaya expressed appreciation for the governor’s consistent support and collaboration with the Nigerian Army. He pledged the Corps’ continued backing of the state government’s development initiatives and reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to maintaining peace, unity, and stability within Edo State and beyond.
The Army Commander also called for government intervention to address the persistent flooding issues affecting the school and surrounding communities in the Isihor and Ugbowo areas. Beyond security concerns, he proposed collaboration in various sectors, including capacity building, youth engagement programs, driver refresher courses, catering services, and firefighting support, to foster holistic Community development.
This renewed alliance signifies Edo State’s intensified Security strategy aimed at curbing kidnapping, fostering stronger Military-Civil relations, and ensuring the safety and Well-being of its residents. It also underscores the state’s resolve to support the Nigerian Army’s efforts while addressing Infrastructural and Socio-Economic challenges impacting its Communities.
