The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) in collaboration with Peace For Humanity Foundation has inaugurated a Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for the planning and mobilization of funds for the establishment of Persons with Disabilities Farm Cities across the six geo-political zones of Nigeria.
The inauguration took place at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre with the theme “Breaking New Grounds for the Neglects.”
The occasion brought together stakeholders within the comity of persons with Disabilities and representatives from relevant ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs).
Executive Secretary of the NCPWD, Hon Ayuba Burki Gufwan, stated that the event marks a shift from dialogue to action, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). He emphasized that PWDs can significantly contribute to national development and growth with the right environment and support.
Gufwan applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership for improving disability inclusion and creating room for the PWDs to gain renewed visibility and hope. He also commended Peace for Humanity Foundation for the project, stating that “inclusion is not charity; it is justice, development, and smart economics.”
The Hon. Minister of Budget and Planning, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, described the initiative as part of President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, aiming to promote inclusion and reduce poverty among Nigerians.
He pledged the Ministry’s support for the project.
The Executive Director of Peace for Humanity Foundation, Mr. Godwin Thompson Udo said the Foundation aims to touch lives, build capacity, and empower humanity through initiatives like the Farm Cities project. He said the project requires N70 billion to be established nationwide.
The Farm Cities project covers various areas, including agricultural projects, Mechanized Farming, Poultry, Fish Farming, Snail Farming, Snake Farming, Vegetable, Cereals, Yam, Cassava, Potatoes, and Cocoyam. Others include
ICT farms, cars engineering, motorcycle equipment, sports, and craft work.
The highlight of the event was the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee, comprising stakeholders from MDAs and Organizations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs).
The National President of JONAPWD, Mallam Abdullahi Mohammed, appreciated the commission and organizers for the innovative project. He reassured stakeholders of his organisations commitment to advocate for the betterment of persons with disabilities at the grassroots level.
Stakeholders and MDAs representatives also appreciated the Honourable Minister, Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, and the Executive Secretary of NCPWD for approving the project.
The Director Social Integration NCPWD, Mr. Lawrence Idemudia, who gave the vote of thanks, called on members of the LOC to use their wealth of experience and expertise to ensure that the project succeeds.
