FIC Report (Edo State) – The Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with the Office of the Edo State First Lady, organized a women’s wellness, fitness and health awareness programme as part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration.
The event was held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and attracted women from different walks of life across the state. Participants took part in various physical exercise sessions, games, health talks and wellness awareness activities aimed at promoting healthy living among women.
Speaking at the programme, the Coordinator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betty Okonobo, stressed the importance of women prioritizing their health and overall wellbeing. She noted that the initiative reflects the commitment of the state government to encouraging healthy lifestyles among women, including regular exercise, balanced nutrition and routine medical check-ups as essential steps toward healthier and more productive lives.
In her welcome address, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, described the event as a celebration of the strength, resilience and unity of women in Edo State.
She explained that the keep-fit exercise was organized not only to commemorate International Women’s Day but also to promote healthy living among women.
“It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this keep-fit exercise organized to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026. Seeing so many strong, energetic and inspiring women gathered here today truly reflects the unity, strength and spirit of Edo women,” she said.
Abdallah noted that the occasion also served as a reminder for women to take care of their own wellbeing while supporting their families and communities.
“Today is not just about exercise; it is about celebrating ourselves. As women, we carry many responsibilities in our homes, workplaces, communities and leadership roles. In the midst of all we do for others, today reminds us of something very important — we must also take care of ourselves,” she added.
According to her, a healthy woman is a confident and productive woman whose wellbeing contributes directly to the development and progress of society.
“When women are healthy and strong, our families, communities and the state become stronger. Staying active, keeping fit and prioritizing our wellbeing should be part of our daily lives,” she said.
The commissioner expressed satisfaction at the large turnout of women, noting that the essence of the celebration is to promote unity, strength and progress among women.
She encouraged women to continue supporting one another while inspiring the younger generation to pursue their dreams and live healthy lives.
“As we exercise today, let us celebrate the resilience of Edo women, support one another and continue to inspire the next generation of girls to dream big and live healthy and fulfilling lives. Let today remind us that our health is our wealth and strong women build strong societies,” Abdallah stated.
Also speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Director of the Edo State Specialist Hospital, Dr. (Mrs.) Anthonia I. Njoku, delivered a lecture titled “Women’s Wellness Across the Lifespan: Understanding Menopause and Healthy Ageing.” She explained that women experience different health challenges at various stages of life and stressed the importance of understanding the physical and hormonal changes that occur over time.
Dr. Njoku emphasized that awareness and proper education are key to helping women manage these changes effectively and maintain good health as they age.
Officials from the Edo State Health Insurance Commission (EDOHIC) also held an interactive session with participants, providing information about the Edo State health insurance scheme. They outlined the available packages and benefits, encouraging women to enroll in order to enjoy access to affordable and quality healthcare services.
