FIC Report (Lagos State) – The Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos has become the centre of school volleyball in Nigeria as the second edition of the National School Volleyball Championships gets underway today.
Schools from across the country have gathered for the four-day competition, which is organised by the Nigeria School Sport Federation in partnership with the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, with support from the Lagos State Sports Commission.
The championship aims to develop volleyball within the school system while also identifying talented athletes who could represent Nigeria at the international level.
Scouts and technical officials from the NVBF are confirmed to be present to assess players throughout the tournament.
Teams from Lagos, Osun, Rivers, Bayelsa, Adamawa, Ogun, Taraba, Bauchi and several other states are competing for honours, with matches expected to provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their abilities.
NSSF president Olabisi Joseph expressed satisfaction with the growing interest in the sport among schools nationwide, while urging participants to represent their institutions with discipline and pride.
She also praised the technical support provided by the NVBF, noting the role such collaboration plays in youth development.
“In Nigeria, we are blessed with an abundance of talent in the school system,” she said.
“Volleyball, being one of the popular sports in schools, has ignited healthy rivalry among students. Sports stimulate learning, so we are building a total child through events like this,” she said.
Joseph added that standout players from the Lagos edition would be shortlisted for further selection ahead of the International School Sport Federation World School Volleyball Championship scheduled to take place in China from July 1 to 10.
The maiden edition of the tournament was held in Abuja, where host teams won both the boys’ and girls’ titles.
Selected players from FCT, Plateau and Kaduna went on to represent Nigeria at the 2025 ISF World School Volleyball Championships in China.
