The Federal Government has intensified efforts to strengthen national security through education-driven reforms, advancing the establishment of a new Campus of the Nigeria Police Academy while accelerating the accreditation and transformation of police colleges across the country.
The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, disclosed this during a high level strategic meeting with the Inspector General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu, Former Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun and key stakeholders, reaffirming that modern policing must be anchored on quality education, structured training, and practical skills development.
According to the Minister, the new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy, slated to be in Ogun State, has received presidential approval in line with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, to modernise Nigeria’s security architecture through knowledge-based systems. The campus will operate as an affiliate of the existing academy in Kano, ensuring compliance with national education policies while expanding access to police training.
Dr. Alausa emphasised that the Federal Government is working towards commencing academic activities at the new campus within the current year, noting that critical processes including resource verification, infrastructure readiness, and academic alignment are being expedited to meet the timeline.
“The directive is clear this institution must begin operations without delay. Our focus is on delivering a system that meets global standards in both quality and relevance,” he stated.
Beyond the academy, the Minister announced sweeping reforms targeting over 40 police colleges nationwide. He explained that the institutions are undergoing evaluation for accreditation and restructuring.
Under the reform framework, selected colleges will be upgraded to offer National Diploma programmes, while others will be repositioned as specialised skills centres focused on practical, industry-relevant competencies essential for modern policing. The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, also highlighted the importance of strengthening technical expertise and teacher training capacity to support the full-scale implementation of the new courses across the colleges.
“Policing today requires more than theoretical knowledge. It demands technical expertise, adaptability, and continuous skills development. These reforms are designed to produce officers who are effective in service and equipped for life beyond active duty,” Dr. Alausa added.
The Inspector General of Police commended the Ministry for its proactive leadership, describing the initiative as timely and transformative. He affirmed the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to align with regulatory requirements and support the immediate take-off of the new campus using available facilities while long-term infrastructure is developed.
Stakeholders at the meeting also underscored the importance of a structured implementation approach, including infrastructure development such as the construction of 500-bed hostels, staffing, curriculum alignment, and phased execution. It was agreed that accreditation processes, resource verification, and institutional assessments would be carried out within clearly defined timelines.
In further support of the initiative, the Federal Ministry of Education confirmed that a comprehensive needs assessment and master planning process will guide the development of the campus and the upgrading of police colleges, ensuring sustainability and efficient resource utilisation.
The meeting concluded with clear timelines and responsibilities assigned to relevant agencies, including regulatory bodies, to fast-track accreditation, curriculum development, and infrastructure planning.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to collaborative, forward-looking reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s education system and enhancing national security through a well-trained, professional, and future-ready police force.
