Edo Govt Advocates Safe Migration, Warns Against Illegal Routes

FIC Report (Edo State) – The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe and legal migration while condemning the growing trend of irregular migration through dangerous routes.

This position was reiterated by the Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, during a meeting with officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Edo State Command, at the Government House in Benin City.

Mrs. Anani stressed the need to protect young people from the dangers associated with unlawful migration, especially risky journeys through deserts and across seas. She called for the removal of barriers that push citizens toward irregular migration and urged the Immigration Service to intensify awareness programmes on legal migration opportunities.

According to her, more enlightenment is needed to help youths understand that travelling abroad through lawful channels is achievable and safer, while also highlighting the severe consequences of illegal migration.

Reaffirming the state government’s support for stronger collaboration with the NIS, Mrs. Anani disclosed that two out of the three requests made by the Service — a vehicle and a parcel of land — had already been approved by the government.

She explained that the request for the establishment of a liaison office within the Government House was yet to be fulfilled due to limited space, adding however that Governor Monday Okpebholo had directed that suitable accommodation be identified for the office.

The Coordinator also commended the Nigeria Immigration Service for improvements in passport processing and issuance, describing the current system as more efficient and seamless than in previous years. She urged the agency to sustain the progress and continue making services accessible to citizens seeking legitimate travel opportunities.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Edo State Command, Mr. Steve Okezie Ibeabuchi, expressed appreciation to Mrs. Anani for her consistent support and cooperation.

He assured the state government of the command’s loyalty and readiness to strengthen collaboration, noting that their commitment to service was a responsibility they were determined to uphold.

Mr. Ibeabuchi further pledged that the command would continue working diligently to ensure immigration processes remain efficient, smooth, and effective for the people of Edo State.
