FIC Report (Imo State) – The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced payment of compensation and resettlement benefits to residents of about thirty-two (32) communities in Imo state who were affected by the company’s Right Of Way (ROW) project.
The initiative also included the flag-off for Skills Acquisition and Business Empowerment programmes under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope initiative in the power sector with about sixty-two (62) individuals receiving vocational training and start-up packs and two hundred and ten (210) business owners empowered with grants.
The managing director TCN , Dr. Ahmed Sule Abdulaziz who was represented by the project manager, Mr. Omonola Odusonga -Sobo, during the implementation of the Resettlement Action Plan for the reconstruction of the 138 -kilometre Alaoji-Onitsha transmission line , commended President Tinubu for backing the project and compensation programme. He also acknowledged and thanked the African Development Bank (AfDB) for their support in the Nigerian Transmission Expansion Phase-1.
According to the Managing Director TCN, the training programmes are designed to create job opportunities and improve livelihood by equipping beneficiate with skills such as in mechanic, tailoring, catering among others.
He emphasized that the project is an investment on people and not charity as beneficiaries are expected to use the support to improve business, create employment and strengthen their communities.
Dr. Abdulaziz further explained that the grants given to artisans, traders and small entrepreneurs are aimed at helping them grow their business and minimize economic hardship, adding that the Renewed Hope Agenda targets empowering ordinary Nigerians like young people and entrepreneurs. He then admonished the beneficiaries to remain committed and make proper use of this golden opportunity, and also called on community leaders to monitor the programme as well as ensure it spreads throughout communities.
Also present was the managing director PGM Nigeria Limited, Mr . Basil Uzodimma who praised the TCN for their good will in compensating residents using the company’s corridor for residential and other purposes.
