FIC Report (Imo State) – The Imo State Police Command has refuted reports claiming that students of Girls Secondary School, Owerri were abducted by suspected herdsmen, stressing that this is false and with the intention of creating panic and fear among residents of the state.
This is contained in a statement to the press by the state Police Public Relations Officer ( PPRO), DSP Henry Okoye, stating that no school in Owerri metropolis or any part of Imo state was attacked.
The PPRO went further to explain that the early closure of the school was an administrative agreement made to allow teachers and the school management to attend a meeting at the Nigerian Union Of Teachers (NUT) headquarters.
He said that both the students and staff of the aforementioned school are safe, and that normal academic activities had continued without any interuption .
According to Mr.Okoye, the Commissioner of Police in Imo state, CP Audu Garba Bosso has instructed the Assistant Commissioner Of Police in charge of operations and coordinator; Safe School Initiative, ASP Abdullahi Wase to carry out thorough investigation regarding the circulating false report of attack and abduction of school children.
Underlying that the team visited and met with the principal of Government Girls Secondary School, Okigwe Road, Owerri, Mrs. Appolonia Amadi, teachers and students, with all of them confirming that there was no attack or abduction, he added that the report was entirely false and misleading.
While reaffirming that there was no case of student abduction or attack on the Government Girls Secondary School, Owerri or any other educational institution in the state, the Command admonished residents to disregard the false information, desist from spreading unverified reports as they can cause confusion.
DSP Okoye warned against intentional dissemination of distorted information, stressing that it is criminal and punishable under the law if the source is investigated and found guilty .
He then reassured of the command’s commitment in safeguarding life and property, particularly in schools, and promised to keep strengthening security measures through the Safe School Initiative to ensure safe learning environment across the state.
