Edo NMA Applauds UBTH CMD Over Commissioning of Geriatrics Library and Lounge

FIC Report (Edo State) – The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Edo State Branch, on Thursday congratulated the Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, and the hospital’s management on the successful commissioning of the Geriatrics Library and Lounge.

In a statement issued in Benin City and jointly signed by the NMA Chairman, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, and the Secretary, Dr. Iluobe Inegbenosun, the association described the project as a significant milestone in improving healthcare services for the elderly.

Dr. Oseghale commended the donor, Chief Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, SAN, for his generosity and commitment to promoting the health and dignity of senior citizens in Edo State. He noted that the philanthropic gesture demonstrates the vital role of private-sector support in strengthening healthcare infrastructure.

According to the association, the Geriatrics Library and Lounge will provide a dedicated environment for learning, relaxation, social interaction, and psychosocial support for elderly patients and their caregivers, thereby improving their overall hospital experience.

The NMA also praised Prof. Ize-Iyamu for her visionary leadership and the UBTH management for prioritizing specialized care for the ageing population.

“The Geriatrics Library and Lounge aligns with global best practices in healthy ageing and further strengthens UBTH’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading teaching hospitals. With the country’s elderly population on the rise, facilities such as this are essential for promoting mental well-being, improving health literacy, and enhancing clinical outcomes. Access to a comfortable environment and relevant educational resources will ensure that our senior citizens receive compassionate and dignified care,” the statement read.

The Edo State NMA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives, partnerships, and policies aimed at improving healthcare delivery, advancing clinical practice, and enhancing the quality of life of patients across Edo State.
