FIC Report (Edo State) – The Edo State Board for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (EdoBTVET), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and the Nigerian-German Centre for Migration and Development (GIZ-ZME), has sensitised trainees of Benin Technical College (BTC) on the importance of safe, regular and informed migration.
The sensitisation programme, held at the college premises in Ugbowo, Benin City, was designed to educate trainees enrolled in various technical and vocational programmes on legal migration pathways while encouraging them to focus on acquiring practical skills for sustainable careers.
Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of EdoBTVET, Mrs. Onomen Briggs, Esq., urged the trainees to remain committed to developing relevant technical and vocational skills, stressing that such competencies would enhance their employability and entrepreneurial prospects both within and outside Nigeria.
She commended the collaboration between EdoBTVET, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and GIZ-ZME for promoting awareness on regular migration among young people. According to her, technical and vocational education provides a solid foundation for self-reliance, economic empowerment and career advancement, adding that young people should avoid the dangers associated with irregular migration and embrace only lawful migration channels where necessary.
Mrs. Briggs encouraged the participants to take full advantage of the opportunities provided through skills acquisition, noting that well-trained artisans and technicians are increasingly in demand in both local and international labour markets.
Also speaking, the Head of the Migrant Resource Centre of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Mrs. Joan Anih, highlighted the need for prospective migrants to follow approved migration procedures. She advised the trainees to seek accurate and reliable information before making migration decisions and to make use of the services offered by the Migrant Resource Centre to ensure safe, orderly and well-informed migration.
In her remarks, the Edo State Coordinator of GIZ-ZME, Mrs. Eseosa Oluku, underscored the importance of combining vocational skills with adequate knowledge of migration processes. She explained that technical and vocational education equips young people with marketable skills that can open doors to employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in Nigeria and abroad when pursued through legal and structured migration pathways.
The programme forms part of ongoing efforts by EdoBTVET, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and GIZ-ZME to empower young people with the knowledge and skills needed to make informed migration decisions, strengthen their career prospects and promote safe and regular migration through continuous public awareness and capacity-building initiatives.
