FIC Report (Abia State) – The Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development (FENRAD), in collaboration with the Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA Resource Centre), has called for a transparent investigation into the June 10, 2026 pipeline explosion at Umuololo, Igiriukwu Autonomous Community, Owaza, in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State.
The organisations made the demand after a three-day fact-finding and community engagement mission to the affected area, where they inspected the site and interacted with residents and other stakeholders.
FENRAD and HEDA said the exercise was aimed at documenting the incident, assessing its possible environmental and livelihood impacts, and obtaining community perspectives on the response to the explosion.
They stressed that their investigation was an independent civil society exercise and was not intended to determine the cause of the explosion or assign liability without adequate evidence.
The groups expressed concern over possible impacts on farmland, soil, vegetation, water resources, livelihoods, public health and the wider environment.
They therefore called for a comprehensive Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) involving relevant government agencies, the operating company, affected communities and civil society organisations.
According to them, the investigation should determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion, the condition of the pipeline, the extent of any crude oil release, environmental contamination, damage to livelihoods and the adequacy of emergency response measures.
FENRAD and HEDA also demanded immediate environmental assessment and scientifically guided remediation where pollution is confirmed. They urged that affected communities be meaningfully involved in investigation, remediation, compensation discussions and environmental monitoring.
The organisations further called for sustained monitoring of the affected area and stronger preventive maintenance, pipeline integrity management and emergency response measures across petroleum-producing communities.
They said the Umuololo incident had again highlighted the need for stronger regulatory oversight, environmental protection and public safety in the Niger Delta.
FENRAD and HEDA urged relevant authorities, petroleum operators and community leaders to treat the incident with urgency and ensure transparency, accountability and appropriate redress for verified environmental and livelihood damages.
They also disclosed plans to produce a detailed joint assessment and advocacy report containing further findings and recommendations from the field mission.
