The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of 60 electric-powered tricycles to commercial transport operators across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones under the Green Bond Project Initiative, in a move aimed at promoting cleaner, affordable and sustainable transportation while creating economic opportunities for operators.
The initiative, implemented by the Federal Ministry of Transportation in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Environment, is part of Government’s efforts to reduce dependence on conventional fuels, curb emissions and advance Nigeria’s transition to green mobility.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Funsho Adebiyi, FNSE, said electric mobility has the potential to reduce emissions, improve urban environmental quality and, in the long term, lower transport operators’ operating costs.
He explained that the 60 tricycles would be distributed equally between the North and South, with 30 units allocated to each, and urged beneficiaries to regard them as instruments of economic empowerment and national assets.
Adebiyi stressed the importance of responsible use, proper maintenance, compliance with safety and regulatory requirements, as well as the provision of effective charging infrastructure, regular servicing, performance monitoring and technical support to ensure the sustainability of the programme.
“As we move forward, we must remain focused on ensuring that Nigeria’s transition to cleaner transportation is inclusive, practical and economically sustainable. Our objective should be a transport system that serves the needs of Nigerians while protecting the environment for future generations,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary commended the Green Bond Project team, technical partners, relevant government institutions and transport stakeholders for their contributions, describing the distribution as a starting point for generating valuable lessons and developing a sustainable model that could be expanded to other locations and modes of transportation.
He expressed confidence that the initiative would contribute to a greener, cleaner, safer and more sustainable transportation system in Nigeria.
Responding, the National President of the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle & Motorcycle Owners, Repairs & Riders Association of Nigeria (ACOMORAN), Prince Samsudeen Apelogun, commended the Federal Government for the initiative, describing the distribution of electric-powered tricycles across the six geopolitical zones as a significant step towards modernising Nigeria’s transportation system and empowering transport operators.
Apelogun expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Transportation and all stakeholders involved, noting that the electric tricycles could lower operating and maintenance costs, reduce dependence on petrol, minimise noise and environmental pollution, improve passenger comfort and create economic opportunities for operators.
He also commended the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for its continued investment in transportation and infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Today, we therefore acknowledge the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, whose administration has continued to place infrastructure and transportation among the important pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
Apelogun pledged that ACOMORAN would ensure that beneficiaries properly maintain the tricycles, comply with traffic regulations, uphold road safety standards and demonstrate professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
The initiative is expected to provide practical lessons for scaling up electric mobility and developing a more inclusive, environmentally sustainable and economically viable transportation system across Nigeria.
