FIC REPORT (EDO STATE) – The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has reinforced its patient-centred approach to healthcare delivery with the commissioning of an ultra-modern Day Room in Ward A4, a strategic move to promote holistic wellness beyond clinical treatment.
The facility, provided under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, is a non-clinical shared lounge designed to break the monotony of prolonged bed rest and hospitalization.
Conceptualized as a homelike relaxation hub, the Day Room offers ambulant patients a serene and dignified space to unwind, socialize, read, watch television, and interact freely with other patients across different bays and wards.
Hospital sources say the initiative is targeted at tackling two silent challenges of hospital admission — isolation and boredom — which often slow down the recovery process.
Speaking on the significance of the intervention, Prof. Ize-Iyamu noted that the project is anchored on global best practice which recognizes that healing goes beyond drugs and procedures.
According to her, shared experiences and social interaction have therapeutic value and can significantly accelerate recovery.
“This intervention is anchored on the belief that shared experiences accelerate healing. We are deliberately forging bridges between individuals across different bays and wards,” the CMD stated.
She added that the Day Room represents UBTH’s comprehensive paradigm of wellness, one that anchors the patient’s recovery journey in an atmosphere of warmth, dignity, and shared humanity.
The new facility provides a convenient, comfortable, and safe environment where patients can gather during the day, fostering peer support and mental well-being while still within the care setting.
Stakeholders have described the initiative as a welcome development that aligns with UBTH’s ongoing transformation drive to blend world-class infrastructure with compassionate, humane care.
