FIC REPORT (ABIA STATE) – The Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Dr Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, has called for stronger collaboration between the state government and journalists to promote accountability, public awareness and transportation sector reforms.
Ukaegbu made the call on Thursday while addressing members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, during the council’s emergency congress. He described the media as a strategic partner in democratic governance, public enlightenment and development.
He said the state government was committed to building a safe, efficient, affordable and sustainable transportation system, noting that transportation contributes to economic growth, social integration and tourism.
The commissioner identified five priorities for the sector: modernising public transportation, developing transport infrastructure, improving road safety, strengthening institutional reforms and promoting integrated mobility.
On the Green Shuttle Service, Ukaegbu said the state had deployed 40 electric buses, with more expected to support intra-city and inter-city transportation. He noted that the initiative would reduce emissions, improve commuters’ experience and create employment opportunities.
He also expressed optimism that the Osisioma Bus Terminal would become fully operational before the end of the year, describing it as a major step towards addressing traffic congestion and disorderly roadside loading.
Ukaegbu further urged transport unions and commercial drivers to prioritise regular eye examinations, stressing that good vision was essential for preventing road accidents. He said the Ministry of Transport was collaborating with the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau to promote drivers’ eye health.
In his vote of thanks, the NUJ National Treasurer, Comrade Victor Ndukwe, commended the commissioner for engaging directly with journalists and called for sustained cooperation between the government and the media.
Ndukwe assured the state government of the union’s continued support for initiatives that promote Abia’s development, while emphasising the need for mutual respect, access to information and adequate support for journalists to perform their duties effectively.
