….Set to commence Re-accreditation of Private Schools
Abia State Government has unveiled plans to reform the state’s Education sector with plans underway for re-accreditation of private schools to meet required standards.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu who revealed this while briefing Journalists at Government House Umuahia on the outcome of the Executive Council meeting, said an enforcement Team has been set up to ensure private schools in the state meet up with all minimum standards required by government.
He said; “The enforcement team will look into the curriculum of the schools to ensure they meet standards and are complaint with the rules and regulations guiding their establishment.
“The Team would look at the spaces these schools have because a lot of schools these days don’t even have grounds for children to exercise. There are too many things in their menu with regards to standards”.
He cited the declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector by the Alex Otti administration upon assumption of office adding that government has embarked on the recruitment of science teachers in the state school system.
In addition to the education sector, the Commissioner pointed out that the Health sector is also undergoing crucial transformations with three general hospitals in the three senatorial zones being equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment, and are expected to be fully operational by the end of the month.

On Infrastructure development, Prince Kanu noted that the state government’s ongoing efforts in rejuvenating Aba, despite the challenges posed by the rains adding that the present government is dedicated to improving infrastructure has resulted in the state’s growing reputation for ease of doing business.
“Aba remains a business hub, and the Governor has taken a bold step towards upgrading the abandoned Enyimba Hotel into a 5-star establishment to attract more investors to the state”, Kanu noted.
In a related development, the Abia Governor has replaced a member of Judicial Panel of Inquiry.
The Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti announced the replacement of Mazi Ugochukwu Okoroafor as a member of the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on the Recovery of Government Properties and Funds and related matters.
In a relaese, personally signed by Governor Alex Otti, he announced the appointment of Dr. Chukwuemeka Chinyere Okwuonu as a replacement.
According to the release, all other provisions of the Panel are retained.
The replacement of Mazi Okoroafor may not have been unconnected with his recent appointment as Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Evaluation.
