FIC REPORT (ABIA STATE) – State Government has announced plans to establish a specialised Stroke and Neurovascular Centre in the state following its selection as the most suitable location for the proposed facility at the 2026 Sweden-Africa Neurosurgery Symposium in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The development, alongside new measures to strengthen public health emergency preparedness, was disclosed during the State Executive Council briefing by Governor Alex Otti.
He highlighted ongoing interventions in specialised healthcare, disease surveillance, preventive medicine and medical infrastructure.
The proposed centre is expected to provide specialised diagnosis, treatment and comprehensive management of stroke and other neurovascular conditions, with the potential to serve patients from across Nigeria and West Africa.
The state’s participation in the international symposium, facilitated through the Ministry of Health with government approval, was aimed at exploring strategic partnerships and opportunities to advance specialised healthcare delivery.
The recognition follows the Ministry of Health’s national acknowledgement as a self-care champion, reflecting its focus on preventive healthcare, healthy lifestyles and improved access to quality medical services.
In a related development, the state government has established a multi-sectoral frontline preparedness and response technical working group and developed an Ebola Preparedness and Response Plan to strengthen its capacity to prevent, detect and respond to public health emergencies.
As part of the measures, the remodelled Mother and Child Specialist Hospital has been designated as an Ebola isolation facility pending the completion of the Infectious Disease Hospital in Aba.
The isolation facility at the Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Amachara, Umuahia, will also support the state’s capacity to manage Ebola and other infectious diseases.
The government further disclosed that no cases of Ebola, Lassa fever, COVID-19, diphtheria or cholera were recorded in Abia between October 18 and November 1, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Wife of the Governor, in collaboration with the Ministries of Health and Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, marked World Breast Cancer Awareness Month with activities promoting public education, preventive healthcare and regular screening for early detection.
On housing, the government announced that the Pocket Layout Housing Estate has attracted approximately 530 expressions of interest for the 173 residential units currently under development.
Governor Otti said the government was considering a lottery-based allocation system to ensure fairness, transparency and equal opportunities for applicants.
He added that a comprehensive assessment of existing government housing estates and layouts was ongoing to identify infrastructure gaps, particularly in internal roads, utilities, security and other essential facilities.
The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the revival of abandoned federal housing estates through land provision and other necessary interventions.
In agriculture, the administration reported progress in its intervention programme across the 17 local government areas, aimed at increasing food production, attracting private investment, strengthening agricultural value chains and creating employment opportunities.
The briefing also highlighted a partnership between the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy and Aba Fashion Week Showcase Limited for the 2026 Aba Fashion Week, scheduled for November 24 to 27, featuring exhibitions, masterclasses and fashion displays.
Preparations are equally underway for the state’s Christmas festivities, with activities including a December 12 concert and convention, a children’s Christmas party, a Night of Praise on December 18 and a Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on December 22.
Additionally, the proposed Abia Tertiary Institutions Sports Fiesta, scheduled for November 3 to 6 at the Umuahia Township Stadium, is expected to attract approximately 1,850 participants. The event will also feature the unveiling of a civic engagement platform for students of tertiary institutions.
The government said the various initiatives formed part of its broader development agenda under Governor Otti, covering specialised healthcare, public health security, housing, agriculture, creative enterprise and youth development.
