FIC REPORT (EDO STATE) – The residents of Evbo-Iyamu in Uhunwonde Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to State Authorities, including Governor Godwin Obaseki, the Oba of Benin, and Security Agencies, to intervene following reports of the destruction of a key bridge over the Oken River.
According to Community Leaders, the bridge, which connects parts of Evbo-Iyamu to its ancestral lands and farmland, was allegedly destroyed by individuals from the neighboring community of Egba. The Community claims that the incident occurred early on Monday, August 31, 2026, after some residents who went to fetch water observed some persons from Egba dismantling the bridge. The alleged perpetrators reportedly fled the scene before the Community members could intervene.
Deacon Samson Eguagie, the General Secretary of Evbo-Iyamu, explained that the destruction is linked to ongoing land disputes. Despite a court ruling by the Palace of the Oba of Benin on September 28,6 2024, and subsequent boundary demarcation on October 7, 2024, community members allege that members of Egba continue to claim ownership of land across the river. Eguagie emphasized that relations have soured, with Community members accusing the Egba people of taking aggressive actions fueled by monetary interests.
He urged Authorities to act swiftly to prevent further escalation, warning that the dispute could lead to broader unrest if left unaddressed. He also called on the Governor, Traditional Rules, and Security Agencies to facilitate dialogue and restore peace.
Other Community Leaders, including the Second-In-Command Pa Osaigbovo Uhunamure, Dr. David Iyamu, and Madam Idiagbonmwen Obayagbona, reiterated that historically, the Oken River has not served as a boundary between the two Communities.
However, Julius Obaghise, Vice President of the Egba Development Association, denied involvement in the alleged destruction. He stated that the Oken River has traditionally been recognized as the boundary between the two communities and noted that a joint assessment of the site was conducted by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Egba and representatives from both sides on Sunday.
As tensions remain high, residents and leaders are calling for urgent intervention to resolve the dispute and prevent further violence.
