FIC Report (Edo State) – The Edo State Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to combating Drug Abuse and Illegal Drug Trafficking through an array of strengthened prevention, enforcement, and rehabilitation initiatives. These efforts aim to protect Youth, promote Public Safety, and foster a healthier Society.
This reaffirmation was made during a crucial Stakeholders’ meeting of the State and Local Government Drug Control Committee, held at Government House in Benin City. The gathering was part of preparations for the upcoming World Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, scheduled for June 26, 2026.
During the meeting, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady of Edo State and Chairperson of the Committee, praised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for its ongoing efforts in the fight against substance abuse. However, she emphasized the need to intensify actions to counter the rising menace of drug-related crime.
Mrs. Anani described drug abuse as a significant threat to societal stability, warning that its destructive impact on current and future generations calls for urgent collective action. She highlighted that the upcoming activities for World Drug Day will serve as a platform to mobilize communities, stakeholders, and government agencies towards greater awareness and intervention.
“While we commend the NDLEA for their dedication, the battle against Drug abuse is far from over. It is destroying our youth and endangering our society. If we do not act now, the problem will escalate beyond control. All stakeholders—government, NGOs, community leaders, and individuals—must come together to tackle this menace,” she stated.
The Coordinator also underscored the link between substance abuse and various criminal activities such as rape, kidnapping, and banditry. She stressed that early intervention through drug education in primary and secondary schools could significantly curb the prevalence and impact of drug abuse in communities.
Mrs. Anani expressed concern over the increasing involvement of certain groups, including Dispatch Rders, Herbal Medicine Vendors (popularly known as “Agbo Sellers”), Street Beggars, and Persons with Disabilities, in the transportation and distribution of illicit drugs. She stressed that effective drug control strategies must extend beyond targeting major dealers to dismantling hidden actors within the drug supply chain.
She called for stronger collaboration among NGOs, Government Agencies, Local Authorities, Community Leaders, and the wives of Council Chairmen to protect Communities from the dangers posed by Drug Abuse.
In his contribution, CN Mitchell Ofoyeju, Commander of the Edo State Narcotics Command of NDLEA, outlined the proposed activities for the 2026 World Day. These include sensitization campaigns and outreach programs in Schools, Religious Centers, and public spaces to raise awareness about the dangers of Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking.
As the date approaches, the Edo State Government remains committed to intensifying public education, Youth-Focused Advocacy, Stakeholder Engagement, and rehabilitation efforts in its ongoing fight against Drug Abuse and trafficking. The administration aims to foster a drug-free environment that safeguards the future of Edo’s Youth and Communities.
