FIC Report (Sokoto State) – The Federal Government has flagged off the construction of 1068 kilometersSokoto-Badagry superhighway. The project which stretches from Illela town of Illela Local Government Area in Sokoto state is expected to pass through Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Ogun, Oyo and Lagos States.
Speaking at the occasion, President Bola Ahamed Tinubu, represented by the Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, said that the project was aimed at improving the wellbeing of Nigerians.
Also speaking, the Minister of works, Dr David Umahi, stated that the first phase of the project would be completed in 2027. He noted that the Lagos-Calabar and Sokoto-Badagry projects would cost the Government the total of Thirteen Trillion Naira with 52 percent of the road located in the North and 48 percent in the South.
The Minister further stated that the Federal Government had adopted concrete rules to ensure a quality project, noting that Government will not compromise on quality work.The highway which stretches from Illela to Badagry is poised to transform Nigeria’s road infrastructure and boost economic activities across multiple sectors.
In his remarks, His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar 111, said that he would personally monitor the construction of the project to ensure adherence to contract specification by the contractor handling the project.
The Sultan, also urged president Tinubu, to consider the construction of super highways in the states that have none, and revive the railway stations.
In attendance were the Minister of works, Dr David Umahi, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Sen.Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Water Resources, Ngozi Umayyad , the Sultan of Sokoto, Alh Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar amongst others.
