FG, AfDB Begin Reconstruction Of Alaoji–Owerri–Onitsha Transmission Line, Compensate Host Communities

FIC Report (Imo State) – The Federal Government, in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), has commenced the reconstruction of the 138-kilometre Alaoji–Owerri–Onitsha 330kV transmission line, following the successful implementation of compensation measures for affected communities.

The project, being executed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), is anchored on the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP), under which approximately ₦10 billion has been disbursed to Project Affected Persons (PAPs) in Imo and Abia States.

Speaking in Owerri, the Assistant General Manager, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) of TCN, Mr. Aromeh Adole, stated that the project involves upgrading the existing single-circuit transmission line to a 330kV double-circuit quad-conductor system.

He explained that the upgrade is expected to significantly increase transmission capacity, thereby enhancing bulk electricity supply across the South East region.

According to him, over 1,200 persons in Imo State and 702 in Abia State have been compensated, with beneficiaries granted a 90-day window to vacate the Right of Way to facilitate smooth project execution.

Mr. Adole appealed to host communities to support the project by protecting critical infrastructure and personnel, cautioning against acts of vandalism, theft, and other forms of sabotage that could impede progress.

Also speaking, the Acting Project Manager of the Nigeria Transmission Expansion Project (NTEP-1), Mr. Edeh Obiora Alexander, commended the Federal Government and the management of TCN for their commitment to strengthening the nation’s power infrastructure.

He noted that the project would boost electricity transmission to key areas including Alaoji, Port Harcourt, Imo, Abia, and the wider South East, while reducing transmission losses and improving grid reliability.

The project is expected to be completed within 18 months.
