Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN CON FCIArb. UK, ably represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, has reaffirmed the federal government commitment in enhancing the viability of Nigeria’s airports as a critical factor in driving the success of the nation’s aviation sector. Speaking at the 9th Airport Business Summit and Expo in Lagos, today Wednesday 21st August, 2024, Meribole , highlighted the urgent need for sustainability, profitable and efficient airport operations as the foundation for the aviation industry’s growth and success.

Delivery his key note address at the summit, themed: “Addressing Airport Viability as a key to Successful Aviation Business Ambition”, Meribole emphasized the vital role airports play within the broader aviation ecosystem. He noted that airports are the hubs of economic activity connecting cities, regions and countries while facilitating the movement of goods and people worldwide. Stating that the success of airlines and other aviation related businesses is inextricably linked to the strength and viability of the airports that they rely on.

He stated that airport viability is not just a priority but a necessity for any ambitious aviation business, while he outlined several critical factors essential to achieving airport viability, including sustainable financial models, Operational efficiency and Motivation, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability and the strategic use of Public Private Partnerships (PPPs).

Speaking on the broader role of airports in national and regional development, Meribole said.” Airports is not just an aviation issues it is a national economic imperative” He further detailed the 5 focus areas of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, which align with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration which is gear towards airports viability. These focus areas he said, includes: Sustainable financial models, infrastructure development, human capital development, adoption of eco-friendly practices and policies. He changed all the delegates and experts present at the summit to work towards actionable plans that will usher Nigeria aviation industry into the next phase of aviation growth with strategic investment, innovative approaches and collaborative efforts.

Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku emphasized the critical role that collaborative efforts play in ensuring the sustainability and success of the nation’s airports. In her presentation titled “Improving Airport Viability through Multistakeholder Engagement,” she highlighted the increasing significance of airports in a globalized world, where they serve not only as gateways to nations but also as economic engines, cultural connectors, and symbols of national pride. Stating that, “Airports are more than just infrastructure; they are vital components of socio-economic development,” .

Kuku further stated that airport viability extends beyond mere financial profitability, encompassing operational efficiency, safety, security, environmental sustainability, and customer satisfaction. She stressed that achieving airport viability is a collective responsibility that cannot be accomplished by any single entity. She called for the active participation of all stakeholders to realize the vision of world-class airports in Nigeria.

Acting Chief Operating Officer/Head of Aeronautics and Cargo, BASL Bi- Courtney Aviation Service Limited, Mr. Remi Jibodu, highlighted the critical role of strategic partnerships and strict adherence to Service Level Agreements (SLAs) in ensuring the long-term viability of airports. In his address, he underscored the significance of collaborative efforts among various entities within the airport ecosystem, including airlines, ground handlers, cargo operators, and service providers. Stating “Partnerships form the bedrock of success in the aviation industry, when built on mutual trust and shared goals, that can lead to innovations that streamline operations, enhance safety, and significantly improve the overall customer experience.

He also emphasized the importance of SLAs as a framework that holds partnerships together and are more than just contracts; but maintaining high standards of service and operational excellence. He further stated that SLAs provide a clear benchmark for performance, which is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and reliability of airport operations. “When all parties are committed to meeting or exceeding standards, which results in reduced costs, higher customer satisfaction, and improved operational efficiency.

Earlier, the Convener of Airport Business Summit, Mr. Fortune Idu, in his welcome address, said Airport Business Summit and Expo (ABSE) is the only dedicated Airport Business gathering in Nigeria, modelled after Airport Council International (ACI), adding that it is focused on implementing the Council reports, finding and best practices in Nigeria to enhanced airport performance in supporting air connectivity.

The three-day event had exhibitors from various airports, Ground handling companies, Ministry of health e.t.c. Awards and presentation were given to exhibitors and Airport Managers who have distinguished themselves in the industry.
