
The Federal Government has inaugurated the Governing Council of the Nigeria Police Academy as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the institutional capacity, professionalism, and global competitiveness of the Nigeria Police Force through quality training, effective leadership development, and sustained police reforms.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held on Monday, May 25, 2026, at the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs, Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator, Dr. Ibrahim Gaidam, described the event as a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s commitment to security sector reform and the modernization of policing in Nigeria.
The Minister conveyed the goodwill and best wishes of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions that promote national security, effective policing, and public trust.


Senator Gaidam noted that, in line with the extant provisions governing the Academy, the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs serves as Chairman of the Governing Council, while the Chairman of the Police Service Commission serves as the Alternate Chairman.
According to him, the arrangement underscores the importance of institutional synergy in providing sound policy direction, effective oversight, and administrative balance for the Academy.
He emphasized that the inauguration was not merely ceremonial but a call to national service, stressing that the Governing Council has a critical responsibility in shaping policy direction, promoting academic excellence, strengthening institutional governance, and upholding discipline and professionalism within the Academy.
Describing the Nigeria Police Academy as the premier institution for training police officers in the country, the Minister stated that the institution remains pivotal to producing future leaders of the Nigeria Police Force equipped with the knowledge, integrity, competence, and character required for modern policing.


The Minister urged members of the Council to deploy their wealth of experience and expertise towards advancing the mandate of the institution by providing strategic guidance, promoting accountability, and encouraging innovation in line with global best practices in police education and training.
Senator Gaidam further reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs to continue supporting the Academy through effective policy frameworks, strategic oversight, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure the institution continues to meet contemporary policing and security demands.
He observed that the current security challenges confronting the nation require a new generation of police officers who are intellectually sound, technologically driven, professionally trained, and community-oriented, adding that the Academy must continue to evolve to address emerging security realities.
The Minister also charged the newly inaugurated Council members to uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and excellence in the discharge of their responsibilities and to make impactful decisions that would strengthen the institution and contribute meaningfully to national development.



In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya Nlia, commended the Honourable Minister for his leadership and acknowledged the role of the Chairman of the Police Service Commission as Alternate Chairman of the Council, noting that the arrangement reflects the importance of collaboration among key institutions in advancing the mandate of the Academy.
Dr. Ogbonnaya described the appointment of the Council members as a call to national service and urged them to guide the institution towards greater excellence, relevance, and global competitiveness.
He also stressed the need to review the Act establishing the Nigeria Police Academy to provide explicit representation for the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs on the Governing Council, noting that such representation would strengthen policy coordination, continuity, and administrative efficiency.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior government officials, members of the Governing Council, top police officers, and other distinguished stakeholders.
