The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening the nation’s internal security architecture and enhancing the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force through sustained institutional support, strategic reforms, and improved funding mechanisms.

The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, CON, stated this during the inauguration of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) held on Monday, 25th May, 2026, at the Ministry in Abuja.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister described the inauguration as a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to reposition the Nigeria Police Force in line with global best practices.
He noted that the Nigeria Police Trust Fund was established as a strategic intervention platform designed to provide sustainable funding for police training, welfare, operational logistics, equipment, and infrastructural development.

Senator Gaidam emphasized that the NPTF has continued to play a vital role in supporting policing operations and improving the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining law and order nationwide.

The Minister stressed that security remains the foundation for national development, noting that no country can achieve sustainable economic growth, social stability, or democratic advancement without a safe and secure environment.
He therefore called on stakeholders to sustain their support for initiatives aimed at improving the professionalism, efficiency, and operational capacity of the Police Force.

Charging the newly inaugurated Board to discharge its responsibilities with integrity, transparency, accountability, and patriotism, Senator Gaidam stated that Nigerians expect improved policing, enhanced security response, better welfare for officers and personnel, as well as prudent management of resources allocated to the Fund.
“The inauguration of this Board of Trustees is not merely ceremonial; it is a call to national service. Nigerians expect sound policy direction, institutional accountability, and measurable results in the management of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund,” the Minister stated.

He assured that the Ministry of Police Affairs would continue to provide the necessary policy guidance and oversight to ensure the effective realization of the objectives of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Anuma Ogbonnaya, N., FMCOG, observed that the evolving security landscape requires innovative approaches, effective collaboration, and sustained investment in policing institutions.
He noted that the inauguration of the Board comes at a critical period as the nation consolidates ongoing reforms to strengthen the operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.

Dr. Ogbonnaya expressed confidence in the capacity, experience, and integrity of the Chairman and Members of the Board to provide effective leadership and strategic direction for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to providing the necessary coordination, policy guidance, and institutional support required for the successful implementation of the Fund’s mandate.

In his vote of thanks, the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, Mohammed Sheidu, appreciated the Honourable Minister, the Inspector-General of Police, and all stakeholders whose contributions added value to the successful inauguration ceremony.

He described the inauguration as another significant step towards strengthening police education, leadership, professionalism, and institutional development in Nigeria.

The event was also attended by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu; the Chairman, Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd); Commandant, Nigeria Police Academy, AIG Patrick Adedeji Atayero; members of the Board of Trustees, representatives of security agencies, development partners, and other key stakeholders.
