The Federal Government has unveiled, the National Roadmap for Vetinary Services in the country, as part of its effort to reposition the Nigerian Livestock Sector and strengthen Animal and Public Health in the country.

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha , disclosed this, at the Animal Health Stakeholders and Validation of National Roadmap forum , for Veterinary Services in Nigeria, today, Wednesday, 29th April, 2026, in Abuja.

In his keynote address, the Minister said that the National Roadmap is far more than a policy document, but a strategic declaration of intent by the Federal Government of Nigeria, to reposition Veterinary services as a cornerstone of National development.

” It reflects our collective resolve to strengthen animal health systems, safe guard public health, ensure food safety and unlock the full economic potential of the livestock sector” he said.

He explained that, it is against this backdrop, that this road map has been developed, anchored on a clear vision, to build a modern resilient and globally compliant veterinary system that would effectively supply livestock productivity, protect public health and facilitate safe trade in animals and animal production.

Maiha maintained that, the road map , will strengthen institutional and regulatory framework to ensure effective governance and enforcement of veterinary standards in Nigeria.

In his welcome address, the Chief Veterinary officer of Nigeria (CVON) , Dr Samuel Anzaku , stated that , the veterinary service in Nigeria has been confronted by some challenges such as lack of infrastructure, disease surveillance, limited human resources , diseases which includes zoonotic and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR).

Dr. Anzaku explained that the roadmap has been carefully developed to address those challenges in a preparative and comprehensive manner.

He added that, it is a product of extensive consultations from experts and institutions.

According to him,” the roadmap applies key priorities, practical strategies and measurable targets, thereby transforming the veterinary services across the country.

Other goodwill messages were delivered by the representative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Economic and Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Directors of Veterinary Services (DVS), Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and among other stakeholders.
