The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s livestock sector through strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing animal health, boosting local production, and driving economic growth.

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha, gave the assurance while receiving a presentation from Chromedix Pharmaceuticals Limited on its proposed Veterinary Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Initiative on Monday, 23rd June 2026, in Abuja.

Speaking during the engagement, the Minister noted that the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s livestock transformation agenda and will contribute significantly to socio-economic development by improving access to quality veterinary healthcare products and reducing dependence on imports.

According to him, the engagement underscores the importance of public-private sector collaboration in advancing sustainable livestock development, strengthening animal health systems, and building local industrial capacity for the benefit of Nigeria and the wider African region.

Alhaji Maiha emphasized that the Ministry remains committed to supporting credible partnerships that will accelerate the growth of the livestock sector, describing the proposed project as a critical step toward transforming Nigeria’s livestock and pharmaceutical industries.

Earlier, the Team Lead of Chromedix Pharmaceuticals Limited, Dr. Dennis Brownie, explained that the purpose of the visit was to present the company’s proposed veterinary pharmaceutical manufacturing initiative, seek alignment with the Ministry’s livestock development priorities, obtain guidance on product and market needs, and explore areas of government collaboration and support.

Dr. Brownie disclosed that Chromedix plans to establish Nigeria’s first local manufacturing facility for veterinary hormonal products, a landmark project expected to reduce the nation’s reliance on imported veterinary pharmaceuticals while improving access to critical animal health solutions.

He further stated that the initiative forms part of the company’s broader ambition to develop the first hormonal pharmaceutical manufacturing platform in Sub-Saharan Africa, serving both human and veterinary healthcare needs.

The company also highlighted its strategic partnership with Bayer, which is expected to facilitate technology transfer and provide technical expertise for the development of hormonal manufacturing capabilities in Nigeria.

According to Dr. Brownie, the collaboration will strengthen local capacity, promote international best practices, and accelerate the development of a world-class pharmaceutical manufacturing ecosystem in the country.

Chromedix noted that the proposed project is in line with the Federal Government’s objectives of improving livestock productivity, enhancing food security, promoting import substitution, creating skilled employment opportunities, and positioning Nigeria as a regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to exploring avenues of collaboration that will support the successful implementation of the initiative and contribute to the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s livestock sector.
