ABUJA – (National Agency for The Great Green Wall Report) – The Chairman of the House Committee on Environment and Habitat, Obinna Chidoka has said that the National Assembly is ready to partner and support the National Agency for The Great Green Wall (NAGGW) towards achieving the set goals for the Agency by the Federal Government.
Obinna Chidoka made the statement recently in Abuja when the House Committee on Environment and Habitat visited the National Agency for the Great Green Wall for an oversight function. He noted that as partners, their visit was to appraise the 2018 budget performance of the Agency and ensure that its activities are well known and that the Federal Government gives it the attention it deserves for the benefit of the people.
During the visit, the members of the Committee expressed satisfaction with the performance in the year under review and tasked the Agency to pay more attention to engaging the affected communities for them to buy in and own the programme.
The Director General of NAGGW, Bukar Hassan (Dr) in his remarks earlier, welcomed the Committee members, and observed that the 2018 budget performance was fair. He reverred that though there are challenges of delay in releasing funds as most of their programmes follow the sequence of the seasons in the year, the Agency was able to make remarkable achievements. He later promised to do more if funds are released in due season.
The National Agency For The Great Green Wall is saddled with the responsibility of discouraging desertification and land degradation, wherein eleven States in the North: Sokoto, Kebbi, Kastina, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Borno and Adamawa are affected.
