The Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has organised a befitting send-forth ceremony in honour of its retiring Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr. Osondu Okoro Peter, with glowing tributes from the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, and his colleague Directors.
Mr. Osondu retired from active service upon attaining the age of 60, after 26 years of dedicated service to the nation as a Treasury Officer.
In his tribute, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, described Mr. Osondu Peter as an outstanding administrator, mentor, and financial expert whose contributions to the ministry and the civil service remain invaluable.
He further described Osondu as an easy-going, articulate, versatile, and approachable personality who consistently supported his colleagues and promoted teamwork within the ministry.
“Peter was widely respected for his ability to defend and support others even in their absence, while also playing active roles in several activities organised within the ministry,” he stated.
Dr. Belgore further praised Osondu’s professionalism and dedication to duty, describing him as a consummate accountant and barrister who contributed immensely to financial management, revenue administration, and policy advisory services in the civil service.
“Mr. Osondu Okoro Peter has mentored many officers and is leaving behind an enduring legacy in the ministry,” he added.
Colleagues and well-wishers in attendance also commended his years of meritorious service, noting that his commitment, integrity, and leadership qualities positively impacted the growth and development of the ministry.
Activities marking the retirement celebration commenced with a valedictory session earlier held by the management staff of the ministry, led by the Permanent Secretary. The session featured an outpouring of encomiums highlighting Mr. Osondu’s professionalism, exemplary conduct, and camaraderie throughout his service in the ministry.
A major highlight of the valedictory session was the formal handover of the affairs of the Department of Finance and Accounts to the incoming Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr. Ikechukwu Nweke, by Mr. Osondu, under the supervision of the Permanent Secretary and members of the management staff.
In his tribute at the send-forth ceremony, the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Dr. Shamseldeen Babatunde Ogunjim, who specially graced the occasion, described Mr. Osondu as a hardworking and diligent professional whose commitment to duty contributed immensely to the prudent management of government resources.
Also speaking at the occasion, the pioneer Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Marcus Ogunbiyi, stated that Mr. Osondu joined the Housing Ministry at a critical time when his expertise was greatly needed. He noted that Osondu provided invaluable guidance in the discharge of his duties as Accounting Officer, adding that he would remain eternally grateful for his support and professionalism.
Prayers were offered for his continued good health, peace, and fulfilment in retirement, as friends, colleagues, and associates celebrated what many described as a successful and impactful career in public service.
