FIC Report (Lagos State) – Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening data governance as a key strategy for accelerating the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the State.
The commitment was reiterated at the Annual SDGs Champions’ Capacity Building Workshop, themed “From Data to Action: Using Voluntary Local Review to Drive the SDGs,” held on Thursday at Protea Hotel, CBD, Alausa, Ikeja. The workshop brought together SDG focal officers and stakeholders from Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to strengthen their capacity in data collection, analysis and reporting.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, described data as the foundation of effective governance, noting that reliable data enables government to identify critical gaps and allocate resources to areas of greatest need.
Finnih explained that data helps government determine areas requiring greater attention in sectors such as education, infrastructure, healthcare and waste management, stressing that evidence-based decisions would ensure efficient use of public resources and improve the lives of Lagos residents.
She also highlighted Lagos State’s achievement of conducting two Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs), which she said had strengthened the State’s position as a leading sub-national government in sustainability reporting. She acknowledged the support of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Her Excellency, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire.
In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Sustainable Development Goals (OSDG), Mrs. Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, emphasised the importance of local ownership in achieving global development targets.
She urged SDG Champions to identify operational gaps across key sectors, including public health, education, gender equity, environmental sustainability and governance, and ensure that policies and programmes translate into measurable improvements for Lagos residents.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Mrs. Olayinka Modupe Ojo, called for improved data collection and reporting across MDAs, noting that accurate data remains essential for effective planning and sustainable development.
She stressed that quality data would support the implementation of the Lagos State Development Plan (LSDP) 2052 and help government make decisions that deliver lasting benefits for future generations.
The workshop equipped participants with practical tools to analyse sector-specific data, identify operational bottlenecks and translate Voluntary Local Review findings into actionable policy interventions towards achieving the 2030 SDG targets.
The event was attended by senior government officials, including the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Estate Surveyor Wasiu Olayinka; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Mr. Babatunde Onigbanjo; and representatives of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health.
