The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the North-West Development Commission, Prof. Shehu Abdullahi Ma’aji, today received a delegation of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the North-West Regional Convention of Medical Students, on a courtesy visit to the Commission’s Headquarters.
The delegation, led by the Chairman of the LOC Khalifa Abdullahi Dahiru, informed the MD/CEO that North-West University, Kano has been granted the hosting rights for this year’s Regional Convention, which brings together medical students from across the North-West and the wider Northern region. The four-day Convention is scheduled to commence tomorrow, 24th December, with a Public Lecture, and will run through to 27th December, 2025.
Speaking on behalf of the LOC, the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Medical Students Association (NIMSA) Northern Caucus, Bilal Muhaamad Bello said the visit was to formally intimate the Commission of the Convention and to seek institutional support and sponsorship to ensure seamless hosting, particularly in the areas of logistics and welfare of delegates. He also extended a formal invitation to the MD/CEO to grace the opening Public Lecture.
The delegation, while apologizing for the late submission of their request, expressed confidence that the Commission, given its mandate on human capital development, would identify with the aspirations of medical students who constitute a critical part of the region’s future health workforce.
In his response, Prof. Ma’aji welcomed the delegation and commended the students for their initiative and organizational effort. He noted that while the timing of the request leaves little room for elaborate management consideration, the Commission will review their submission with dispatch and extend possible support within available institutional provisions.
The MD/CEO emphasized the importance of hospitality and excellence in hosting, noting that Kano, as a centre of learning and culture, must continue to demonstrate its capacity to host national and regional gatherings.
“Kano is known for its hospitality. Those who come must leave with a good impression. We encourage you to ensure your colleagues from other universities enjoy their stay, participate fully, and return safely to their destinations,” the MD/CEO said.
“The Commission is committed to youth and human capital development. Medical students are central to the future of our healthcare system. We will look into your request and see what we can do within the shortest possible time to support a successful Convention,” he added.
Prof. Ma’aji directed the relevant department handling youth and student engagements to immediately review the LOC’s letter and advise Management accordingly.
He wished the LOC a successful and impactful Convention.
