The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, has successfully intervened in a matter involving the National Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria, averting what could have escalated into public unrest in Abuja.

The Minister, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Dr. Ogbonnaya Anuma Nlia, engaged leaders of the association who had expressed deep concerns over the delayed passage and assent to the Police Pension and Welfare Bill, which they consider critical to addressing longstanding welfare challenges affecting retired officers.

During the engagement, the National Chairman of the Association, CSP Raphael Irowainu (Rtd), highlighted the hardships faced by retired police personnel under the Contributory Pension Scheme, noting that many retirees struggle to meet basic needs after years of dedicated service. He emphasized that the proposed Police Pension Board is intended to provide improved welfare support and ensure dignity in retirement.

The Association appealed for expedited government action, stressing that the bill has already been presented to the National Assembly of Nigeria and now awaits Presidential assent.

Responding, the Minister assured the retirees of the Federal Government’s commitment to resolving the matter with urgency and empathy.

He conveyed the government’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by police officers and reiterated that efforts are ongoing to ensure the bill receives the necessary attention and due process.

He further urged the retirees to remain calm and law-abiding while the Ministry continues to work with relevant stakeholders to secure a lasting and humane solution.

The Ministry of Police Affairs reaffirms its dedication to the welfare of serving and retired police personnel and remains committed to constructive dialogue as a pathway to sustainable reform and national stability.
