NCS Intensifies Crackdown On Illicit Drugs, Hands Over ₦2.63BN Seizure To NDLEA In Owerri

FIC Report (Imo State) – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘C’, has handed over a large consignment of seized illicit and controlled substances valued at over ₦2.63 billion to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Owerri, Imo State, for further investigation and appropriate action.

The confiscated items include over 1.1 million Tramadol tablets, 21,245 bottles of Codeine-based syrups, hundreds of sacks of Cannabis Sativa, and various quantities of other prohibited substances such as Ghanaian loud, Scottish loud, and colos.

Speaking during the handover, the Comptroller of the Unit, Mr. Bishir Balogun, attributed the successful interception to credible intelligence, sustained surveillance, and the professionalism of Customs officers.

Mr. Balogun noted that the operation reflects the Service’s unwavering commitment to combating the trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs.

He expressed concern over the growing misuse of controlled substances, particularly among youths, noting that such abuse poses serious threats to public health, contributes to criminal activities, and undermines social stability.

The Comptroller emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration, describing the handover as a demonstration of strong synergy between the Nigeria Customs Service and the NDLEA in addressing drug-related offences.

He reiterated that such cooperation is essential in ensuring that seized substances are properly handled and prevented from re-entering circulation.

Speaking further, he commended officers of the Unit for their vigilance, dedication, and integrity, while urging members of the public to support law enforcement agencies by providing timely and credible information.

The exercise underscores the continued commitment of security agencies to protecting public health, safeguarding communities, and strengthening the fight against illicit drug trafficking in Nigeria.
