The Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, had a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad of The Gambia, His Excellency, Sering Modou Njie, on the margins of the ongoing ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone, on Wednesday, 15 July 2026.
Ambassador Enikanolaiye commended the Nigeria-Gambia bilateral relations, which have been excellent over the years. He stated his intention to enhance and deepen the brotherly ties between the two countries, and the need to further explore opportunities for collaboration to the mutual benefit of Nigeria and The Gambia.
The Gambian Foreign Minister congratulated the Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs on his appointment and appreciated the kind gesture of initiating closer collaboration with him. He buttressed the importance of Nigeria-Gambia relations and stated that The Gambia remains grateful to Nigeria for the leadership role the country played during the political impasse experienced in 2017. The Minister attributed the political stability and current development in the Gambia to Nigeria’s timely intervention, a feat that remains indelible in the history of the country.
He also appreciated Nigeria’s brotherliness, which has always been expressed through the deployment of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corp (TAC) volunteers to assist in capacity building, especially in the educational, medical, and legal sectors, military troops to the ECOMIG forces, and the training of the Gambian military in the Military academies in Nigeria.
The Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs thanked The Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs for the friendship between the countries and seized the opportunity to emphasize Nigeria’s commitment to promoting pan-African unity, solidarity and development, especially under the framework of the Nigerian Technical Aid Corp (TAC), which is a platform through which Nigeria deploy highly qualified professionals based on request to African and Caribbean countries to support manpower development.
Both sides agreed on strengthening relations between the countries with the resuscitation of the Nigeria-Gambia Joint Commission, as it would provide a platform to review moribund agreements and explore new areas of cooperation.
