The Government of Nigeria warmly congratulates the Government and people of the Republic of Indonesia on the occasion of the country’s 81st Independence Anniversary, being celebrated today, 17 August 2026.

On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extends warm felicitations and best wishes to the Government and people of Indonesia on this significant national occasion. Nigeria joins the Indonesian people in commemorating the proclamation of their independence on 17 August 1945, and celebrating Indonesia’s journey of nation-building, resilience, economic transformation and national development.

Nigeria and Indonesia enjoy cordial and longstanding relations anchored on mutual respect, shared interests and a common commitment to peaceful coexistence, multilateralism and international cooperation.

Nigeria recognises Indonesia as an important partner in Southeast Asia and appreciates its constructive role in regional and global affairs, particularly its advocacy for dialogue, peace and cooperation among nations.

Nigeria attaches importance to the considerable potential for further deepening and broadening bilateral cooperation with Indonesia, particularly in trade and investment, agriculture, energy, manufacturing, digital technology, education, healthcare and maritime cooperation. Stronger engagement between the private sectors of both countries can further facilitate investment, technology transfer, economic growth and opportunities for the peoples of Nigeria and Indonesia.

As two prominent members of the Global South, Nigeria and Indonesia share common interests in advancing sustainable development, strengthening food and energy security, addressing climate change and promoting a more equitable international economic and political order. Both countries also have an important role to play in strengthening multilateral institutions and advancing the interests of developing countries.

Nigeria further recognises the value of enhanced opportunities for increased people-to-people exchanges between both countries through cooperation in education, culture, tourism, sports, youth development and professional exchanges. Such engagements will contribute to greater mutual understanding and further strengthen the bonds of friendship between Nigerians and Indonesians.

The Federal Government of Nigeria looks forward to working closely with the Government of Indonesia to deepen bilateral relations, expand areas of cooperation and strengthen collaboration on regional and global issues of shared interest.

Nigeria once again extends its warm congratulations to the Government and people of the Republic of Indonesia on the occasion of the 81st Independence Anniversary and wishes the country continued peace, unity, stability, prosperity and sustainable development.
