The Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, Sen (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, recently led the Federal Government’s reform efforts with the formal launch and handover of the Nigeria Police Regulations (Amendment) 2026—an important framework designed to strengthen accountability, professionalism, and service delivery within the Nigeria Police Force.

The Regulations, signed in November 2025 and gazetted in February 2026 pursuant to the Nigeria Police Act 2020, provide a comprehensive operational guide for modern policing and align police operations with democratic principles and global best practices. Speaking at the launch in Abuja, the Minister described the Regulations as a transformative instrument that reinforces institutional accountability, transparency, and citizen-focused policing.

The reform process was highly consultative, involving the Ministry of Police Affairs, Police Service Commission, Federal Ministry of Justice, National Human Rights Commission, civil society organisations, and development partners.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to immediate implementation through integration into training, operations, and enforcement across all commands. The Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Police Trust Fund, Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his sustained commitment to police reform, noting that the Regulations establish clear standards that will enhance the impact of interventions in the sector.

Also speaking, Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Nigeria) highlighted the role of accountable and people-centred policing in national development and social cohesion. The Ministry acknowledged the technical and financial support provided under the SPAAT programme funded by the Germany. The new Regulations introduce clearer command structures, strengthen disciplinary and oversight mechanisms, enhance recruitment and career progression systems, and reinforce human rights and gender-responsive policing. With the framework now in force, the Federal Government emphasised full implementation across training institutions and operational systems, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing police reform agenda.
